Oh, comparison. It’s the thief of joy or something like that, right? Well, I’d argue that social media has definitely proven that concept correct.
Now more than ever it’s important for us to redefine our personal journey and goals along the way, or we risk being swept up in unattainable expectations from relative strangers on the internet.
I’m not saying you’re not allowed to like nice things or strive to attain a designer handbag or nifty sportscar. IF those things are items that were always important or meaningful to you, then go for it. But if you want things just because you think you should…run, it’s a trap.
This can be material, but it can also extend to relationships and even kids. People post things because of how they look- idyllic. The keyword here is “look”. You’re ingesting carefully crafted small glimpses of other peoples’ highlights; you’re not seeing the fight they had 3 seconds later after snapping that photo. You’re not aware that they’re $30,000 in debt from buying that car and going on that vacation.
It’s easy to judge ourselves based on how we differ from the lives of others, especially if those other people want things or a trajectory that is socially acceptable or desired.
But that doesn’t mean we have to.

Once you stop measuring your life based on what you lack, an entirely new world opens up to you. A world where you get to choose what you value, and where you want to go. You get to choose what does luxury means to you.
You have to start defining yourself and your goals based on what you consider luxury; on what would make you most happy. Maybe that is a nice partner, 2.5 kids and a dog probably named Scout or Bagel or whatever.
Or maybe you want to live in a van. Or a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Or a normal average apartment. Cool, do that. Do whatever you want, simply because you want to do it. You get to decide your path and base your life around what you have and what you want, not what an influencer on Instagram told you to strive for.
You decide.
