This is such an exciting post! Today, I want to recap a conversation I had with three amazing women that went through my Self Love Over Codependency (SLOC) program. They’ve gone through the program and had time to really apply their learnings to their lives, so they were able to share how it’s changed them, the positive effects, and what life is like now for each of them. I’m so grateful they shared their journeys to self-discovery with me, and I find what they had to say to be super empowering. I hope you do too!
First up is Ashley M. Before she went through the program, she was a people pleaser. But now, she cares about herself and her own experiences a lot more than she used to. The program helped her see that she doesn’t need to do things for others that she doesn’t want to, and that when she did so, it wasn’t truly helping herself.
She’s a much more authentic person to herself now, which she finds helps so much in her day-to-day life. She’s able to do things out of desire and not because she’s concerned with pleasing others, which has really empowered her to put herself first. Amazing!
Something else Ashley shared is that her relationship with food has changed as a result of the program, although that’s not something the program specifically sets out to do. Ashley noted that prior to this work, she was not eating enough, probably because not eating gave her some sort of control over that aspect of her life. But now, she’s much more motivated to take care of herself and no longer has overwhelming emotions that make eating feel like a chore. She also feels like she’s worthy of feeding her body and taking care of it that way (she is!). Overall, she’s able to listen to what her body needs in a much more effective way.
Before completing the program, Ashley noted that she had a big “lack mindset.” She didn’t see herself being able to move away from the lifestyle she had and didn’t believe that good things could happen for her. But since completing SLOC, she’s been able to get a car, and she feels like manifestation was real in making that possible. She stressed that now she realizes that what she wants IS possible.
Getting there means caring about yourself, though, which is something else she’s come to realize. You have to care about how you feel and your emotions, and once you do – it’s life-changing! She simply doesn’t want to put herself in situations where she doesn’t feel valued anymore. While she never thought she could feel this way, she realizes how empowering it is. While she still sometimes experiences feelings and emotions that she used to before the program, now she has the tools to deal with them, which is a very relieving feeling.
Ashley used to crave the ability to be vulnerable with others but was held back by a fear of how she’d be received. Now, she sees how amazing it is to share and how she shows up and talks to people is so different. Her confidence has skyrocketed in the best of ways, and she was able to bet on herself by going through the course. It was truly a new beginning. She wants others to know that the moment you decide you want better for yourself, your life will change. What an incredible learning and message!
Samantha is the next woman that shared her SLOC story. She was previously in a toxic and abusive relationship, which she has since left. She had issues validating herself, but now – she knows her value much more than she ever has. She feels so healed and has worked through her codependency.
The program also prompted her to reflect on her childhood. Through doing so, she’s come to the realization that just because she had bad aspects of her childhood, it doesn’t mean she has bad parents.
Another huge thing she took from the program was to love and trust herself. She’s now able to connect with her intuition and be much more attuned to her own desires. Interestingly, she also shared that this has changed her relationship with food and exercise. By working through her self-doubt, she’s lost almost 30 pounds because she’s more connected to her body. Prior to going through the program, she was very emotionally driven in her connection to food.
But now, she takes care of herself better and exercises regularly. This has been amazing for her physical, mental, and emotional health. She’s able to now really plug into her body and listen, which is incredibly empowering!
Samantha shared that she previously thought that she was great at taking feedback, but through her work in the program, realized that she had a tendency to be defensive. Now that she’s more connected with herself, she’s able to disconnect, observe, and reflect on feedback. From there, she can choose if she wants to take and apply the feedback or let it go. This is another source of empowerment for her.
Something that Samantha struggled with prior to the program was living in the future, which caused a lot of anxiety and worry. Now, she trusts herself to live in the present and isn’t constantly overthinking things. This is a huge weight off her shoulders and she knows that there’s no reason to prepare for the worst when she truly deserves the best. She’s switched the narrative from “what if something bad happens?” To “what if all these great things happen to me?!” She’s able to celebrate her big and small wins, listens better to those around her, and is able to hold space for others more effectively. This has strengthened all her relationships, which she’s so grateful for.
Another thing Samantha shared that really stood out to me is that she used to think no one else understood how she felt. Then she found my podcast. It allowed her to realize that there’s a community that relates to her and from there, everything clicked. It’s no coincidence she came across it, and she finally was able to understand that there was a way out after being numb for so long. She had been running away from her feelings, but seeing that others felt the same way as she did force her to face things without fear. She enjoys her life so much differently now, and I’m so happy for her for that!
For Ashley S., so many great things came out of the course. She left a job that was making her miserable and has since found one that she loves. While she used to feel stuck, she now feels so much more free. She had been at the job for three years and found so many extra responsibilities falling on her because of an absent manager.
That caused a lot of pressure to build, and she simply wasn’t happy there anymore. She gained the confidence to leave the job with no backup plan because she knew she had to prioritize her happiness. She put herself first and accepted a lot of support from her family and friends, although that wasn’t the basis of her decision. She ended up getting a better job with a different company, better pay, enhanced benefits, and a better work-life balance.
From that experience, she realizes that it’s amazing what can happen when you listen to yourself and simply follow your heart. She shared that sometimes she had doubts that things could get better for herself because she couldn’t imagine a different situation, but she’s so happy she trusted in the process and changed her life for the better.
Like Ashley M., she was able to discover a lot about her childhood and realized that her mom was not present for her the way she needed, which she wasn’t able to see and understand before.
She also identified as a people pleaser prior to the program, but now – she puts herself first. She loves the feeling of being able to say no without feeling bad and she no longer feels guilty when she prioritizes taking care of herself. Her needs get to be met, and that’s an amazing thing!
As far as her love life goes, she is less dependent on her partner now and finds herself to be a better lister. She can also take criticism so much better than she was previously able to and no longer feels attacked by it, making it so much easier for her to take accountability in her life. That’s such an important thing!
Ashley noted that she uses the tools she learned in the program every day and her biggest message to others is to choose themself, just like she has learned to do from now on.
Hearing these incredible stories made me see that after completing the program, each of these ladies has found their own way. These accounts are truly incredible and I hope you’re just as inspired by them as I am!
